What is IDO?
An Initial DEX Offering (IDO) is a token launch that takes place on a decentralized exchange (DEX). Unlike a traditional ICO, an IDO provides immediate liquidity and allows the market to determine the token price through an Automated Market Maker (AMM).
How does IDO work?
- A project partners with a "launchpad" or directly with a DEX.
- Tokens are added to a liquidity pool along with a pairing asset (e.g., USDT or ETH).
- The initial price is set, and users can swap for the new token instantly.
- As users buy the token, the AMM algorithm automatically adjusts the price upward.
- The project gains immediate access to the funds in the liquidity pool.
Why does IDO matter?
IDOs offer a fairer and more transparent launch process than ICOs, as they are permissionless and allow anyone with a wallet to participate. They solve the "liquidity problem" by ensuring that tokens are tradeable from the very first minute.
Key features of IDO
- Permissionless and decentralized
- Instant liquidity and trading
- Dynamic price discovery via AMMs
- Lower barriers to entry for projects
- Open to a global audience without KYC (usually)
Examples of IDO
Many popular DeFi protocols, such as Raven Protocol and various projects on Polkastarter or SushiSwap, have used IDOs to distribute their tokens and build initial liquidity.
