What is Smart Account?

A smart account is a smart contract that replaces a traditional private key account, enabling programmable security features like multisig, social recovery, spending limits, and gasless transactions through EIP-4337.

How does Smart Account work?

  1. Your account is a deployed smart contract rather than a bare private key.
  2. You create a "UserOperation" defining the action you want to perform.
  3. A bundler submits it to the network.
  4. The contract validates the operation against its custom rules and executes it.

Why does Smart Account matter?

It removes the biggest UX barrier in crypto the seed phrase. Users can recover accounts through trusted contacts and set spending limits that prevent catastrophic losses from a single mistake.

Key features of Smart Account

  • Programmable security multisig, spending limits, whitelists
  • Social recovery without a seed phrase
  • Gasless transactions via paymasters
  • Custom validation logic

Examples of Smart Account

Argent offers smart accounts with social recovery and daily limits. Safe is the leading multisig smart account used by DAOs and institutions.

Paymasters sponsor gas fees, enabling free-to-try onboarding experiences.
